JANESVILLE, Wis. (Jan. 9, 2012) - In today’s health care environment, if SSM Health Care were to build a new hospital it would have to be state-of-the art and of course it would have to come complete with the Epic electronic health record (EHR). So on January 9, 2012 SSM Health Care-Wisconsin opened the new 50-bed St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital in Janesville, Wis. and for the second time since the beginning of Project Beacon, a new hospital was opened with the EHR in place.
"I have been involved with several of the Epic implementations since Project Beacon began and this has been one of the smoothest," said Annette Fox, Director of Clinical Systems for Wisconsin Integrated Information Technology & Telemedicine Systems (WIITTS).
"You’re a little concerned, because there is so much to learn with Epic and then you add learning your way around and learning to work with new co-workers in a new facility...it could be overwhelming," she said. "But this team has done a great job."
While both SSM St. Clare Health Center in St. Louis and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital both opened with the EHR in place, Janesville is the first new hospital in SSM to open with the complete EHR that includes the clinical, revenue, scheduling and registration components of the Epic system.
